Introducing Dr. Nicholas J. Gonzalez

In the age of the Internet, there is no dearth of opinions on the subject of health, illness, and remedies. When top experts differ on these topics, sometimes even contradicting each other, ordinary people are left with confusion about whose opinions to accept or whom to trust.

Here are some of my own personal criteria that I use in assigning credibility:

  • If the person is certified as a professional, preferably by a reputable institute, I give him (her) some credibility while keeping in mind that most certificate holders do not have genuine expertise.
  • If he is highly intelligent and talented as demonstrated in his works, I give him some credibility while keeping in mind that not all talented individuals use their talents for the right purpose.
  • Then if he has done sufficient amount of work and research that demonstrate positive results, then I give him good amount of credibility, while keeping in mind that not all published works show unbiased truths and can potentially hide failures or contradicting results.
  • Then if he is known, through his works and actions, to be a sincere, selfless, unbiased person who is untied to financial interests and dedicated much time and efforts for the sole objective of helping people rather than for financial goals, then I give him a lot of credibility, while keeping in mind that good intention alone is not enough and that one also needs expertise.

After having listened to every one of his published lectures I could find, and read a number of books and articles by or about him, I can comfortably say that Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez met all of these four criteria.

Dr. Gonzalez is best known as a top physician in treating cancer using natural, alternative methods. He was, however, a conventionally trained physician. He first studied at the well-known Brown University, graduating magna cum laude in English literature and soon thereafter began his career as a medical journalist for the Times, Inc. Impressed with his medical journalism in several well-known magazines, someone pushed him to consider medical studies. Taking that suggestion seriously he went for medical school, a turn of event that is surely fortunate for the study of disease and healing considering his eventual contributions to the world. He graduated from Cornell University Medical College, an Ivy League medical school, and then completed postgraduate immunology in the prestigious Sloan-Kettering cancer institute in New York under fellowship of Dr. Robert A. Good, a nominee for Nobel Prize who was considered the father of modern immunology and was President of Sloan-Kettering. Under Dr. Good’s care, he was trained to do bone-marrow transplant for treating cancer when only a very few had received such training.

In short, Dr. Gonzalez was not a “quack”, a label often assigned to naturopathic doctors by many conventional physicians. Rather, not only was he thoroughly educated and trained as a conventional physician in treating cancer, but also he received, as a highly talented student, such training from the country’s prestigious medical institutes. For a physician of his caliber to then turn his back on conventional treatment of cancer using toxic chemotherapy and radiations, where he could have made a financial fortune, and pick up research in alternative treatment of cancer where the prospect of making a living was dim, is a matter worth serious consideration.

One remarkable quality of him, among others, is that he never failed to give people credit – in fact it seemed he liked to recognize others at every opportunity. Even if he had developed a method significantly, he would readily credit the individual who first came up with the concept, though he may be long gone, forgotten, and hardly anyone knew that person had it not been Dr. Gonzalez mentioning his name, or even if that individual was a contemporary who turned inimical. In my opinion, it is this kind of sincerity and lack of vanity that aided him and his work in ways that are beyond people’s ability to understand.

Dr. Gonzalez is among a shortlist of physicians and health experts who earned my love and admirations. Though I never met him in person, he touched my heart and that of many others who were treated by him or engaged with him in one way or another. Regrettably, by the time I came to know about him, he had already passed away in 2015, hence I did not have an opportunity to meet him or at least write him a letter to express my heartfelt appreciations for his service and dedication to help people.

Below are some of his books. A reader of his books would likely conclude, as did I, that his earlier ventures in English and journalism played a part in his medical books where his skills as a writer are prominently evident. He employs a distinct writing style, a fact I soon noted as I began to read his books. His pen produces no-nonsense sentence, writing matter-of-fact style without vanity or a goal to impress anyone and to the point, yet providing details that are important and necessary. Medical topics are not easy to read, but he completes his story or chapter from beginning to end in lucid progression. His earlier interest in English literature had certainly not gone to waste but rather played out wonderfully well in the gifts he left behind for the world in the form of medical literature.

  1. He was my Doctor, and every word you have written is true. He was also very caring and would call each and every patient back who had called during the day with any questions you may have had about the protocol or your condition. I am still in his protocol after 10 years, and it’s changed my life and given me life. He was one of the kindest and most genuine person I have ever met.
